Day 90: A Whoop Whoop Christmas Cracker!

G’day mates! It’s that time of year when the land Down Under swaps snowflakes for gum leaves, and Santa trades his sleigh for a ute. Yep, it’s Christmas in Australia—where reindeer are just kangaroos in festive disguise, and it’s hotter than a sausage sizzle on Australia Day!

Here’s a ripper fun fact for you: Did you know that Christmas in Australia aligns with cicada season? That’s right! Those little noisemakers are nature's version of Mariah Carey, chirping away to let everyone know they’re back and louder than ever. Known as the "bush orchestra," their summer symphony can drown out even your Uncle Bruce’s BBQ yarns.

But here’s the kicker: some Indigenous mobs believe cicadas symbolize renewal and transformation—perfect for the festive season! So while the rest of the world is decking the halls, we’re serenaded by the original bush band.

Whoop Whoop Tips for a Cracker Christmas:

  • Forget the tinsel—string up some cicada shells on your gum tree for an authentic Aussie touch.

  • Add a boomerang to your stocking (just don’t expect it to come back if your throw’s as dodgy as mine).

  • Treat yourself to a Bush Tucker feast—who needs turkey when you’ve got kangaroo skewers and wattleseed pavlova?

Whether it’s a didgeridoo rendition of “Jingle Bells” or dodging magpies under the mistletoe, the Aussie Christmas spirit is as unique as our wildlife.
