Day 42: The Footprints of Time

G’day, mates! It’s Day 42, and I’ve been trekking through some of the most ancient and awe-inspiring landscapes that Australia has to offer. From the dusty outback to the winding rivers, every step feels like I’m walking in the tracks of the old ones. Literally. Today, we're talking about the 120,000-year-old Aboriginal occupation of the land, and how those footprints tell a story bigger than me—bigger than any of us!

The Land Before Time: A Hiker’s Dream

Imagine hiking through places where human footprints have been etched in the sand since before time as we know it. Yep, that's the kind of wild adventure we’re talking about here. We’re not just stepping into nature, we’re walking alongside the Dreaming itself. Before the earth was shaped by ancestral beings, it was flat, and those legends shaped the land we now explore. Every time you take a step, you’re walking through history—Australia’s living history.

What You Might Find on a Whoop Whoop Trek:

Cave paintings: This area is literally the oldest human footprints in the area we hike, found at Beechworth. Just imagine stepping into the exact spot where someone stood tens of thousands of years ago. Gives a whole new meaning to "following in someone’s footsteps."

Ancient Ochre Artifacts: Over at Gkow Swamp, we’re talking 50,000-year-old pieces of white ochre! That’s older than your nan’s famous lamington recipe, and trust me, just as legendary. This is real Aussie heritage—right there, in your hands.

Scar Trees: Want to meet tool of the trade? You’ll have to join me for a yarn or two at this fascinating archaeological site. The Benalla Region is home to some of the earliest known scar trees Destination Goulburn Valley. Nothing quite like having a cuppa and pondering the deep past while sitting by the same lakes our ancestors once gathered around.

Finding the Dreaming (And Yourself!)

For Aboriginal people, the Dreaming isn’t just a myth, it’s life. And I’ll tell you what—walking these trails, you start to feel it. The land was shaped by powerful beings, and you’ll see it in every ridge, every valley, every scarred tree. I’ll show you how to spot the hidden signs in the landscape—like ancient carvings, boomerang marks, and even corroboree sites that are still used today. You'll leave with more than just sore feet—you’ll leave with a story older than time.
