Day 38: Kow Swamp – Where Old Bones and Bad Directions Meet!

G’day folks! It’s your favourite Whoop Whoop Walk About guide, back at it again, and today we’ve hit the jackpot – Kow Swamp! Now, I’ve seen a few holes in my time (mostly from falling into ‘em), but this one’s got 22 ancient skeletons in it. Yep, real old! Alan Thorne dug them up between 1968 and 1972, but me? I found a meat pie I lost two years ago in the back of my ute – equally impressive if you ask me.

A Quick History Lesson

Turns out, Kow Swamp ain’t just a fancy mud puddle. It’s where our First Nations ancestors were buried thousands of years ago, and get this, they had some serious burial traditions! Picture this: Every man gets painted up (except for the father – the body placed up in a tree, and after a year, the fellas come back, paint the bones in red ochre, then pop ‘em in a hollow log that is painted with a few totems on it. It’s like a spiritual makeover with some stomping and chanting to boot!

What Could Go Wrong?

Well, besides me taking a wrong turn and ending up knee-deep in mud, nothing! Kow Swamp is the perfect place to soak up a bit of history (and maybe some swamp water if you’re as clumsy as me). It’s also great for bird watching – if you can tell a bird from a plane, unlike yours truly.

The Big Question

Ever thought about where you’d like to be buried? Up a tree sounds pretty adventurous, right? Let me know in the comments... or just share your best “dance move moment”!
