Day 17-Lal Lal Falls Reserve: Where Bunjil’s Spirit Soars

G’day, fellow adventurers!

If you’ve been following our Whoop Whoop Walk About, you’ll know that we’ve stumbled upon some pretty amazing spots, but today’s gem is one of the most spiritually significant in Victoria—Lal Lal Falls Reserve. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Avalon, it’s just another waterfall, right?” Well, let me tell you, this place is more than just cascading water and scenic views—it’s where the spirit of Bunjil, the All Father, calls home!

The All Father’s Domain: Bunjil at Lal Lal Falls

For the uninitiated, Bunjil is the big boss in the Dreamtime stories of many Victorian Aboriginal tribes. He’s the Creator, the one who shaped the land, the animals, and the people. And here, at Lal Lal Falls, is where his spirit is said to dwell. Imagine that—a waterfall that’s not just a natural wonder, but a spiritual powerhouse! Talk about a double whammy.

The name “Lal Lal” is thought to be Aboriginal for “dashing of waters,” which is pretty spot on when you see these falls in action. But it’s not just the water that makes this place special—it’s the connection to Bunjil. Standing at the viewing platform, you can almost feel the ancient energy in the air, as if Bunjil himself is watching over the land, keeping everything in balance.

A Walk Through Nature’s Masterpiece

Now, don’t just stand there gawking—there’s more to explore! Take the short 200-meter walk to the viewing platform for a close-up of the falls, or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, head around the gorge on the Von Guerard View Track. It’s a bit of a trek, but the view across the gorge is well worth the effort. Plus, you’ll get a real sense of the land that Bunjil created—rugged, untamed, and full of life.

Speaking of life, the reserve is a haven for all sorts of critters. From small mammals to reptiles and birds, this place is a real wildlife hotspot. And let’s not forget the plants—there are 13 species here that are of regional significance, and one that’s rare not just in Victoria, but in all of Australia. It’s like Bunjil’s own personal garden!

A Spot for Every Occasion

Whether you’re here for a spiritual journey, a picnic with the family, or just to take in the beauty of the falls, Lal Lal Reserve has got you covered. There’s a large grassy area perfect for a game of footy or a lazy afternoon nap, a playground for the kids, and even an undercover shelter with BBQ seating. And for those of you who like a bit of history with your sausages, the information boards will fill you in on the area’s cultural and environmental significance.

The Bunjil Dreaming Story at Lal Lal Falls

The connection between Bunjil and Lal Lal Falls runs deep. In the Dreamtime, Bunjil created the land, the rivers, and all living creatures, and then took up residence here, at these very falls. His spirit is believed to guide and protect the land, ensuring that it remains in harmony. When you stand at the falls, you’re standing on sacred ground, a place where the earthly and the spiritual meet.

It’s said that Bunjil watches over the land from his home in the sky, often taking the form of a wedge-tailed eagle, soaring high above. But his presence is felt most strongly here at Lal Lal Falls, where the dashing waters remind us of his power and the life he brought to this world.

So next time you’re in the area, don’t just breeze past Lal Lal Falls. Stop, take a moment, and connect with the spirit of Bunjil. Who knows, you might just feel a little bit of that ancient magic yourself.

Final Thoughts

Lal Lal Falls Reserve is a place where nature, culture, and spirituality come together in a way that’s truly special. It’s a spot to reflect, to appreciate, and to remember that we’re all part of something much bigger than ourselves. So grab your hat, your sense of adventure, and maybe even a sausage or two, and head out to Lal Lal Falls. You won’t regret it!

Until next time, stay safe, stay curious, and as always, keep it whoop whoop!

Cheers,

Avalon Karatau
