Day 13: Just Like Asking the Leyland Brothers!

Departure from Sunbury: We’re setting off from the heart of Sunbury, with a convoy of eager explorers, ready to tackle the rugged beauty of Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock. Our journey north is like stepping into a real-life postcard, with each bend in the road revealing more of Victoria's stunning landscapes. Crikey, it’s gonna be a ripper of a day!

Mount Macedon: A Tiny Tourism Giant Our first stop is Mount Macedon, a pint-sized powerhouse that bagged the Bronze award in the 2022 Top Tiny Tourism Towns competition. The village itself sits at a cozy 615 meters above sea level, but if you’re feeling adventurous (and who isn’t?), you can head all the way up to the summit at 1001 meters. That's higher than a kangaroo on a pogo stick!

What to Do in Mount Macedon:

Nature’s Wonderland: Mount Macedon is more than just a mountain; it’s a natural wonderland! Here, you'll find heritage gardens rubbing shoulders with wild bushscapes of towering eucalyptus, pine, and Mountain Ash. The landscape changes with the seasons, and if you time your visit right, you might even catch the mountain dusted with snow – perfect for a bit of snowman building, Aussie style!

Macedon Regional Park: Stretch your legs and explore the 30 kilometres of trails that snake through Macedon Regional Park. If you’re lucky, you might spot a kangaroo or wombat, and if you're really lucky, you won't step in what they left behind!

Cellar Door Adventures: Now, if you’re feeling a bit parched, Mount Macedon’s cool climate wines are just the ticket. Pop into Mount Towrong Vineyard or Mount Macedon Winery for a tipple or two – just don’t let the wine do all the walking for you!

Hanging Rock: Where Mystery Meets History

The Legend of Hanging Rock: Next, we head over to Hanging Rock, a place as steeped in mystery as my old mate’s fishing stories. If you've ever heard of the mysterious disappearance of schoolgirls back in 1901, you’ll know this place has more secrets than an emu in a bush telegraph. As you wander up to the pinnacle, you’ll be retracing their steps – just don’t go vanishing on us!

What to Do at Hanging Rock: After solving the mystery (or at least giving it a crack), take a pram-friendly stroll through the reserve, enjoy a picnic with views of the rock, or try your hand at fishing for trout in the dam. And don’t forget to drop into the Hanging Rock Cafe for a well-deserved coffee or a cold beer – because solving mysteries is thirsty work!

Wildlife at Hanging Rock: Keep your eyes peeled for the locals – no, not the mystery girls, but the koalas, kangaroos, and echidnas that call Hanging Rock home. With over 40 species of birds flitting about, this place is like an Aussie aviary!

Tips for the Adventurer:

  • Entry Fees: Make sure you’ve got a tenner for parking, or more if you're bringing a busload of mates.

  • Best Time to Visit: Autumn’s great for the colors, but spring brings a burst of blooms that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a bushland fairy tale.

  • Dog Policy: Bring your four-legged friend along, but keep 'em on a leash – we don’t want any dingo dashes!

So, pack your sense of adventure (and maybe a spare pair of undies if you scare easy), because today’s journey from Sunbury to Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock is one you’ll be yarning about for years to come. Until next time, keep the outback spirit alive and remember – if you get lost, just ask the Leyland Brothers!
