WANA WALK On a Shoe String Budget

But on my Bucket List!

WHY DID I DO THIS?

5-Day Trek with Whoop Whoop Walk About: From Green Ants to Cave Paintings

Ah, the age-old question: Why did I sign up for a 5-day trek across the wilds of northeast Victoria with Whoop Whoop Walk About?

Well, mate, buckle up because this ain’t your average bushwalk! You’re about to embark on a journey from green ant tasting to ancient cave paintings, all while hearing tales that’ll make you wonder how we’re still alive after all this time. And if you’re wondering how we squeeze Ned Kelly’s caves, scar trees, canola fields, and hot air balloons into one epic experience, keep reading…

The Story Starts in Murmungee... But Not As You Know It

Before white fellas slapped a name on it, the land now known as Murmungee was home to the Min-jan-buttu Aboriginal tribe. We don’t just wander through these areas; we listen, learn, and laugh as we connect with the land’s original stewards. From there, we’ll visit sites like Beechworth, Woolshed Falls, and Ned Kelly’s hideouts. Ever wondered how Kelly evaded the troopers? Well, let me tell you—it might have been because they weren’t carrying green ant snacks.

Day 1: Beechworth & Woolshed Falls - Welcome to the Bush!

Our adventure begins at Beechworth—where gold once brought settlers and chaos to the region—and ends at the spectacular Woolshed Falls. Don't worry, we’re not panning for gold (unless you fancy your chances), but we’ll take in stories of colonial times, explore the rugged falls, and share a laugh or two about the local critters who thought the gold rush was just as ridiculous as we do.

Day 2: Ned Kelly’s Caves & Glenrowan - Where Legends Were Made

Ever wanted to visit where Australia’s most famous bushranger holed up? Well, get ready to step inside Ned Kelly’s caves and get a feel for what it was like to evade capture (without the iron helmet). We’ll walk you through the very places Jack Noble, one of the six black trackers, helped track down Kelly. From there, we visit Glen Rowan for a classic old time photo—beer and history in one stop.

Day 3: Yarrawonga to Cobram - The Mighty Murray & Scar Trees

Day three takes us along the mighty Murray River to Yarrawonga and Cobram, where we learn about scar trees—ancient markers of Aboriginal craftsmanship and culture. And if you’re up for it, there’s always a tasty critter or two you can try out, cooked fresh on the fire (yes, green ants are a delicacy… for some).

Day 4: Barooga to Ulupna - Hot Air Ballooning & Winery Tour

If the weather’s on our side, today’s your chance to take to the skies! We’ll kick off with a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the expansive canola fields of northeast Victoria. Bright yellow fields below, Mt Buffalo in the distance, and you, floating above it all. Just make sure you don’t spill your coffee in the balloon basket, alright?

And when we land, it’s straight to a local winery tour, because nothing says "trekking" quite like a good glass of vino. Whether it’s King Valley Prosecco or a cheeky Shiraz, it’s time to relax before heading back to camp.

Day 5 Paintings, Scar Trees, and Farewell

The final day of the trek is all about connecting with the ancient world—cave paintings, scar trees, and finishing with a visit to a site significant to the Min-jan-buttu people. We’ll light a traditional fire, and maybe we’ll even get that didgeridoo to make the right sound (or we’ll just laugh at ourselves trying). And to wrap it all up, there’s a little farewell corroboree to send you off in true Aussie fashion.

Optional Extras (For the Brave Ones)

  • Hot Air Balloon Ride (weather permitting)

  • Winery Tour to unwind after a long day of adventuring

  • Boomerang Throwing & Didgeridoo Playing—because what’s an outback trek without embarrassing yourself at least once?

What’s Included?

  • Comfortable air-conditioned bus transport for the entire trip

  • 4 nights’ accommodation (room shares sorted, no frills but plenty of thrills!)

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner—green ants optional, pub grub mandatory

  • Entry fees for all Aboriginal sites to ensure they’re preserved for future adventurers

  • Daily doses of laughter, history, and Aussie culture

  • My expert guiding services (you’ll be lucky to survive my jokes)

Why Yellow? The Psychology of Colour

You’re going to see a lot of yellow on this trek. Yellow symbolizes happiness, positivity, and energy—exactly what you’ll feel while trekking with us. Whether you’re floating above the fields in a hot air balloon or gazing at them from the bus, this vibrant colour is sure to bring some joy to your day.
